Homework Handout #2

Now that you have a magnetic field map for the magnet from the interpolation lab, let's use it. If you have a 15 MeV electron coming into the magnet along the z1 axis, where does it go? What is the total deflection in degrees of the electron at the point where it leaves the magnet boundary?

If the incoming electron beam could have a width of 1 cm centered on the z1 axis, what is the variation in deflection angles on the way out due to the change in impact parameter? What if the width was 2 cm?

If you could scale the magnetic field uniformly up or down (but keeping it the same shape – just change the normalization), how much would you have to scale the field strength to get a bend of 45o?

To figure out the path, numerically integrate along the electron path. It's just like you'd do in intro mechanics only the force isn't constant, so do it one little “ds” at a time.
